Zenith's tribute to inter-war aviation - 45mm cushion case referencing onboard instrument clocks with a raw tool-watch spirit.
The Zenith Pilot Type 20 Extra Special, reference 29.2430.693/21.C723, occupies a precise position within Zenith's sustained effort to excavate and commercialize its own aeronautical heritage — a lineage tracing to the large-format onion-crown instrument watches of early aviation. The dial presents this lineage with acceptable fidelity: Arabic numerals of appropriate weight, a tobacco or aged-white coloring that performs the aesthetic function of vintage patina without the inconvenience of genuine age. Concordantly, the large crown — the Type 20's most legible reference to its predecessors — remains the case design's singular point of conviction. The 45mm diameter, however, constitutes a structural problem. At 14.25mm of thickness, the case imposes itself upon the wrist with a certainty that forecloses consideration for a non-trivial portion of the wearing population, and this is not restraint in service of tradition but rather scale for its own legibility. The Cal. 693 is a competent automatic derivation, adequate at its stated 50-hour power reserve, yet it does not approach the distinction of Zenith's El Primero lineage and registers as a functional rather than exceptional movement. The leather strap, as standard, is merely functional. At $6,500 USD, the value proposition is defensible but not compelling — the probability of a better-proportioned pilot alternative at comparable price is, as you undoubtedly gather, non-negligible.
