Lange 1

I'll be honest: reviewing the Lange 1 feels a little like reviewing the Sistine Chapel. Where do you even start? The asymmetric dial layout should not work - the outsize date in the upper right, the subsidiary seconds, the power reserve indicator - and yet it is one of the most harmonious, intentional dials in all of watchmaking. The Cal. L901.0 movement, if you've ever seen it in person, will rearrange something in your brain. Finishing that would make most Swiss watchmakers quietly weep with envy. Is it expensive? Extraordinarily. Is value for money hard to argue on a rational level? Sure. But the Lange 1 isn't a rational purchase - it's an emotional one that happens to be backed up by genuine, breathtaking craft. A masterpiece, full stop.

The Lange 1 Moonphase is a seriously impressive piece-the movement finishes are stunning and the dial layout just works, even if it takes a minute to read at a glance. That said, at this price point you're really paying for the name and heritage; there are other chronometers out there that'll keep better time for less money. Still, if you want something that looks bulletproof on the wrist and doesn't need constant tweaking, this is about as close to "set it and forget it" as you'll get in haute horlogerie.
